Daan van Heerden: Director, Head of Mining Engineering

B.Eng. (Min. Eng.), M.Com (Business Admin), Dip. Data Metrics (Computer Science)

Daan has worked in the mining industry for 30 years. He has a vast amount of experience in managing underground
and opencast mining operations in South Africa and abroad for world-class mining majors and junior mining  focused
companies. He has assisted with new business development for two major mining companies, one of which is
on gold, while the other deals mainly with platinum. He has experience in mining mergers and acquisitions (friendly 
and hostile) and related activities such as valuation, due diligence, finance structuring and subsequent change
management. Daan has also contributed significantly to ore reserve management, technical services, productivity
improvement and operating cost reduction.

Martin Biewenga: Mine Planner

N.Dip. (Land Surveying)

Martin joined Minxcon in 2010 after having worked as a senior consultant for Riaan Herman Consulting, where

he gained extensive experience in a production environment. Martin currently designs mines using SURPAC
Surveying Software and assists on various projects at Minxcon.
 

Michiel Breed: Mining Engineer

B.Eng. (Mining)

Michiel obtained his B.Eng. Mining degree from the University of Pretoria in 2004. As a member of AngloCoal,
he gained production and management experience working in various positions in production. He joined the  
team of mining engineers at Minxcon in October 2008. As a mining engineer, Michiel’s responsibilities include
technical evaluations, first principle operating cost estimations, capital estimations, life of mine planning, pre-
feasibility studies, feasibility studies and project management. He has worked on projects dealing with  
commodities such as coal, gold, uranium and platinum. He is currently completing his studies toward a
M.Eng. – Project Management at the University of Pretoria.
 

Neels Pretorius: Mine Planner

Neels Pretorius started his career in 2001 as an Anglo Platinum bursar. He obtained his permanent blasting
certificate in 2004 and was immediately appointed as a miner in a trackless mining section of Frank Shaft,
Rustenburg, where he worked until December 2004. He then worked as a miner at Marula Platinum Mine near
Steelpoort until January 2006, whereafter he acted as Shift Supervisor in a hybrid mining section. Neels was 

subsequently appointed as Shift Supervisor in January 2007, whereupon he became involved in mine planning,

as well as drilling and blasting operations for his responsible section. He gained experience in mechanised 
and hybrid mining sections whilst at the Driekop Shaft of Marula Mine. He held this position until July 2010,
when he joined Minxcon. He is currently studying towards his National Diploma in Mining Engineering, which
he intends to finish by the end of 2012. Whilst at Minxcon, Neels has completed various underground and
surface projects.
 
 

De Wet Dreyer: Mechanical Engineering

After having completed his Mechanical Engineering Degree at the University of Pretoria in 2009, De Wet
worked for B&E International, where he gained experience in opencast mining, stone crushing and commercial
quarrying. As the site manager of numerous plants, he was responsible for day-to-day operations on site. De
Wet joined Minxcon in November 2011. His duties include capital cost estimation and engineering design.
 
   
 
 

Alwyn Scholtz: Mining Engineer

B.Eng. (Mining)

Alwyn obtained his B.Eng. Mining degree from the University of Pretoria in 2008. As an employee of Anglo
Platinum on Union Section, he gained production experience while working in various positions in production. 
Alwyn joined Minxcon in April 2011. He is currently working on various projects, including Competent Persons’
Reports and conceptual studies.
 
 
 
 

Daniël Johannes (Deon) van Wyk: Mining Engineer

B.Eng. (Mining)

Whilst in the employ of Anglo American Platinum on Siphumelele 2 and Thembelani 1 shafts, Daniël occupied
various positions in production, thereby gaining production and management experience. Daniël joined the
team of mining engineers at Minxcon in March 2011 and is currently working on a wide range of projects
involving mine design. He is also in the process of obtaining his Mine Manager’s Certificate for metalliferous
mines.
